Graham Barber Delivers Verdict on Ryan Gravenberch’s Controversial Red Card

Former Premier League referee Graham Barber has shared his opinion on the controversial red card shown to Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch during their 3-0 defeat against Manchester City at Anfield.

Gravenberch was sent off in the 62nd minute after receiving his second yellow card for a foul on Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku. His dismissal proved costly for Liverpool, as City took advantage of having an extra player to secure a convincing victory.

Although Barber believes referee Chris Kavanagh was justified in sending Gravenberch off, he has raised questions about the midfielder’s first yellow card.

The Dutch international initially received a booking following a challenge on Manchester City midfielder Elliot Anderson. Barber believes that decision was questionable, adding to the debate surrounding the eventual dismissal.

The former referee stressed the importance of officials making the right decisions when issuing yellow cards, particularly during high-pressure matches. He believes a player’s first booking must be justified because it can put them at risk of receiving a second yellow card later in the game.

Barber also suggested that the situation might have attracted less controversy if the two incidents had happened in reverse order.

In his view, Gravenberch’s challenge on Doku was a clearer booking because it stopped a promising counter-attacking opportunity. Had that been his first offence, the discussion surrounding his sending-off might have been different.

Despite his concerns about the initial booking, Barber maintained that the second incident gave the referee sufficient grounds to issue another yellow card, resulting in a red under the rules.

The decision remains a major talking point among Liverpool supporters, especially because the match was still goalless when Gravenberch was dismissed.

Manchester City quickly took advantage of their numerical superiority, with Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki scoring to complete a 3-0 victory.

For Liverpool, questions remain over whether Gravenberch’s first yellow card was warranted and whether the decision played a significant role in changing the outcome of the match.
