UEFA BANS LENS FANS FROM ANFIELD AS CLUB OFFICIALS FUME OVER RULING

UEFA Bans Lens Fans From Liverpool Clash at Anfield as Club Officials React Angrily

Liverpool will face French side Lens without travelling away supporters at Anfield in the Champions League after UEFA imposed a two-match away-fan ban on the Ligue 1 club.

The punishment follows crowd trouble during Lens’ 3-0 defeat to Club Brugge in Belgium last week, when some travelling supporters reportedly set off flares and threw pyrotechnics towards home fans. The incident briefly interrupted the match.

Lens had already been under UEFA probation following similar incidents involving flares and fireworks during their European fixture against Slavia Prague in September.

UEFA Hands Lens Heavy Disciplinary Punishment

UEFA’s disciplinary authorities have sanctioned Lens for the incidents in Bruges, citing the use of pyrotechnics, the throwing of objects and damage to stadium facilities.

The French club has been fined €80,000, approximately £67,000, and prohibited from selling tickets to its supporters for its next two Champions League away matches.

The suspension will apply to Lens’ trip to RB Leipzig on November 24 and their visit to Liverpool at Anfield on January 27. A third away-match ban has also been suspended for a probationary period of two years.

As a result, Lens will be unable to bring their travelling supporters to Merseyside for the Champions League encounter.

Lens Chiefs Reportedly Furious Over Supporters’ Behaviour

According to French media outlet L’Équipe, Lens officials are deeply unhappy with the actions of the individuals involved in the disorder. The club is also reportedly planning to withhold tickets from its supporters for the upcoming Ligue 1 away fixture against Lille.

Lens are known for having passionate supporters who regularly create an intense atmosphere at matches. Their absence at Anfield will therefore be disappointing for those genuine fans who had hoped to support their team in England.

However, the punishment comes after repeated incidents involving dangerous pyrotechnics, leaving UEFA to take a firm stance on supporter safety.

Liverpool Fans to Have Anfield to Themselves

The decision means Liverpool will host Lens in January without an official away-supporter allocation, removing the prospect of a large travelling French contingent inside Anfield.

While bans of this nature can affect the atmosphere at major European matches, safety must remain a priority. Throwing flares and other objects towards spectators can put innocent supporters at serious risk.

The hope is that those responsible will face appropriate consequences and that future incidents can be prevented.

Football should be an enjoyable experience for everyone attending a match, and the irresponsible actions of a small group should not be allowed to endanger others.
