Liverpool are reportedly facing disappointment in their pursuit of Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke, with fresh reports suggesting the Dutch international has set his sights on a move to Tottenham Hotspur instead.
The Reds are in the market for defensive reinforcements this summer amid uncertainty surrounding Ibrahima Konate’s future and with Virgil van Dijk entering the latter stages of his career. While highly-rated youngsters Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet are expected to be part of Andoni Iraola’s plans next season, Liverpool are still eager to add more experience to their backline.
According to reports from the Netherlands, Liverpool have held talks with Van Hecke, whose contract at Brighton runs until 2027. Chelsea and Newcastle United have also shown interest in the 26-year-old centre-back, who has emerged as one of Brighton’s standout performers.
However, Tottenham appear to have stolen a march on their Premier League rivals. Spurs are reportedly preparing a third offer for Van Hecke after already agreeing personal terms with the defender.
A key factor in Tottenham’s advantage is manager Roberto De Zerbi, who previously worked with Van Hecke at Brighton. Their strong relationship is believed to have played a major role in convincing the Dutchman that North London is his preferred destination.
Reports claim Van Hecke has now made up his mind and wants to join Tottenham, despite interest from several other clubs. Spurs remain determined to finalise the transfer quickly, allowing the defender to focus fully on the upcoming World Cup.
Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has also spoken positively about the potential move, revealing he discussed the club with his international teammate and believes it would be a great step in his career.
Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has acknowledged the ongoing speculation, stating that while clarity over a player’s club future is ideal, transfer developments are often beyond anyone’s control.
With Tottenham pushing hard to complete the deal, Liverpool’s hopes of bringing Van Hecke to Anfield appear to be fading.
