Liverpool’s summer rebuild is accelerating and, while attention has largely centred on attacking additions, the success of Andoni Iraola’s new era could ultimately depend on how the club reshapes its defence.
According to reports from The Mirror, Liverpool are carefully evaluating the future of their backline following a period of major upheaval. The departures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson have left significant gaps, forcing the Reds to rethink several key defensive positions ahead of the new campaign.
Iraola’s arrival at Anfield marks the beginning of a new chapter, with his high-intensity, front-foot style demanding defenders who are aggressive without the ball, composed in possession and capable of contributing to attacking phases. As a result, defensive recruitment has become a priority.
Liverpool have already taken a major step by securing the signing of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes in a deal reportedly worth £60 million. The 20-year-old centre-back is viewed as a cornerstone of the club’s future and arrives at a crucial time following Konate’s exit.
While Virgil van Dijk remains the leader of the defence and Joe Gomez continues to offer valuable experience and versatility, Liverpool are still believed to be searching for another top-class central defender. Sporting CP’s Goncalo Inacio has emerged as one of the leading candidates, with the Portuguese international admired for his composure on the ball, intelligent positioning and progressive passing.
At 24 years old, Inacio offers the ideal blend of youth and experience, while his reported £55 million release clause is unlikely to deter Liverpool if they view him as a long-term solution.
The right-back position remains another area of focus after Alexander-Arnold’s departure. Rather than relying on a direct replacement, Liverpool appear ready to share responsibilities across the squad. Conor Bradley is expected to play a key role once he returns from injury, with the club maintaining strong faith in his potential. Jeremie Frimpong and Calvin Ramsay also provide additional options and competition.
On the opposite flank, Liverpool appear better placed despite Robertson’s move to Tottenham. Milos Kerkez is expected to take on a more prominent role, while Kostas Tsimikas could return to provide cover and depth.
If Liverpool complete their defensive plans, a backline featuring Bradley, Jacquet, Inacio, Van Dijk, Gomez, Kerkez and Tsimikas would offer a balanced mix of youth, experience and technical quality. It would also underline the club’s commitment to building a squad capable of thriving under Iraola’s demanding system.
For Liverpool supporters, the prospect of combining emerging talents with proven performers provides plenty of reason for optimism. While replacing influential figures such as Alexander-Arnold, Konate and Robertson will not be easy, the club’s recruitment strategy suggests they are focused not only on immediate success but also on securing the foundations for the future.
