Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been approached over a potential move for highly-rated AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit, although Spurs may ultimately prefer to see the Dutch youngster join Newcastle United instead.
Much of Tottenham’s transfer focus in recent days has centred on ambitious moves for Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. Supporters are excited by the possibility of the Italian and Portuguese midfielders forming a dynamic new partnership, with Spurs seemingly prepared to break their transfer record to land the Newcastle and West Ham stars.
Away from those headline pursuits, Tottenham have continued to monitor one of the Eredivisie’s brightest young talents. Kees Smit has impressed over the past two seasons at AZ Alkmaar, earning a reputation as one of the Netherlands’ most promising midfielders.
According to TEAMtalk, Spurs have admired the 20-year-old for some time and have recently been approached about his availability. However, Newcastle United have now emerged as the frontrunners for his signature after intensifying their interest. The report claims Smit is open to leaving AZ this summer, prompting the Magpies to accelerate their plans.
Newcastle’s recruitment team reportedly views Smit as an ideal fit for Eddie Howe’s system, praising his technical ability, composure in possession and football intelligence. The Dutch midfielder is currently valued at around €60 million (£52m).
Interestingly, Newcastle’s pursuit of Smit could work in Tottenham’s favour. TEAMtalk suggests the Magpies see the AZ star as a potential successor to Sandro Tonali, whose future has become increasingly uncertain amid strong interest from Spurs.
Adding to the speculation, Football Insider reported earlier this week that Newcastle are also stepping up their interest in Lamine Camara as another possible replacement for Tonali, with the Italy international increasingly expected to leave St James’ Park before the transfer window closes.
