Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly emerged as the strongest Premier League contenders to sign Cody Gakpo, although Manchester United continue to admire the Liverpool attacker after years of tracking his progress.
Spurs have already demonstrated this summer that they are prepared to compete with England’s biggest clubs for elite talent, and with Roberto De Zerbi now targeting reinforcements in attack, another high-profile transfer battle could be on the horizon. Gakpo has been identified as one of Tottenham’s leading options for the left wing, but United’s long-standing interest could yet complicate any potential move.
Tottenham Showing Serious Intent
Tottenham’s transfer business has reflected their growing ambition. Reports claim they beat Manchester City and Arsenal to secure Sandro Tonali from Newcastle in a £100 million deal before edging out Manchester United for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes in an £85 million move. With much of the squad already strengthened, De Zerbi is now prioritising a left-sided forward, placing Gakpo firmly on Spurs’ shortlist.
Spurs Viewed as Favourites
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Tottenham are currently the most realistic destination if Gakpo decides to leave Liverpool. While Manchester United have admired the Dutch international since before his move to Anfield, a transfer directly between Liverpool and United remains highly unlikely due to the fierce rivalry between the clubs. Tottenham face no such barrier.
Jacobs also stressed that there is no indication Gakpo is actively seeking an exit despite speculation emerging from the Netherlands. Liverpool are therefore relaxed about his situation for the time being, although that stance could change if the player signals a desire to move.
Romano Confirms Tottenham’s Interest
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has also linked Gakpo with Tottenham’s search for a new winger, although he is reportedly one of several names under consideration. Savinho is still believed to be Spurs’ primary target, while the club have reportedly cooled their interest in Rafael Leão despite AC Milan making the Portuguese forward available. The decision reflects De Zerbi’s preference for players who best fit his tactical approach.
Club Struggles but International Success
Gakpo endured a relatively quiet season at club level, registering nine goals and six assists in 52 appearances. However, he reminded everyone of his quality during the World Cup, contributing three goals and one assist in four matches for the Netherlands. His ability to play across multiple attacking positions continues to make him an attractive option for De Zerbi.
Liverpool Yet to Be Pressured
At present, any move remains far from certain. Gakpo has not submitted a transfer request, and Liverpool are not actively looking to sell. Nevertheless, Tottenham remain attentive to the situation, while Manchester United continue to monitor developments. After winning several transfer battles this summer, Spurs appear increasingly confident of landing top-level talent, with Jacobs describing them as the “most concrete” suitors should Gakpo’s future at Anfield become uncertain.
