The countdown to the new Premier League season is on, but Liverpool still have important business to complete in the transfer market before the campaign begins.
Andoni Iraola has spent the club’s pre-season tour of the United States assessing the squad at his disposal, but Sunday’s 4-2 defeat to Leeds United highlighted several weaknesses that still need addressing. Liverpool looked in complete control after first-half goals from Luke Chambers and Florian Wirtz handed them a two-goal advantage. However, the Reds collapsed after the break, conceding four times in just 25 minutes as Leeds turned the game on its head.
The new Liverpool boss has not yet had the opportunity to work with several senior stars, with Virgil van Dijk and Alexis Mac Allister still unavailable following their World Cup commitments. Even so, the performance against Leeds reinforced the need for further reinforcements before Liverpool open their Premier League season away at Newcastle on August 23.
1. A Centre-Back
Defence remains Liverpool’s biggest concern. Injuries have severely weakened the squad, with Giovanni Leoni still recovering from the ACL injury he suffered on his debut, while fellow newcomer Jeremy Jacquet has yet to feature during pre-season. Joe Gomez is also expected to miss the start of the campaign, leaving Iraola short of reliable options.

Although Van Dijk’s return will provide a major boost, the youthful backline struggled badly under sustained pressure from Leeds. Liverpool would benefit from signing another experienced centre-back who can offer leadership, depth and quality throughout what promises to be a demanding season.

2. A Left-Back
Strengthening the left side of defence should also be a priority. Liverpool need greater competition and cover in the position, particularly with a long and demanding campaign ahead. A modern full-back who can contribute defensively while also supporting attacks would give Iraola more tactical flexibility and reduce the workload on the current options.
Adding a quality left-back would improve squad depth, increase competition for places and provide Liverpool with another reliable outlet going forward. With ambitions of challenging on multiple fronts, the Reds cannot afford to leave such an important position understrength.
