Roberto De Zerbi to sign his old striker Amine Gouiri for Tottenham this summer

Tottenham Transfer News: De Zerbi Wanted to Reunite With Former Marseille Star Amine Gouiri

Tottenham Hotspur may have recorded back-to-back Premier League victories, but concerns remain about their lack of goals from the striker position.

Omar Marmoush and Dominic Solanke have both managed just one Premier League goal this season, a statistic that is unlikely to satisfy head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

If Spurs are serious about securing a top-four finish, they will need a dependable goalscorer to lead their attack. Reports have now revealed that De Zerbi wanted Tottenham to sign a forward he knows particularly well.

Tottenham attempted to sign Amine Gouiri in the summer

Marseille striker Amine Gouiri emerged as a potential Tottenham target towards the end of the summer transfer window.

According to a report from La Provence, relayed by Sport Witness, Spurs showed serious interest in signing the 26-year-old Algeria international.

De Zerbi previously worked with Gouiri at Marseille after bringing him to the French club from Rennes in January 2025. Since then, the forward has recorded 26 goals and 10 assists in 53 appearances, including 17 goals and six assists under the Italian manager.

The report claims De Zerbi made another attempt to reunite with his former player during the summer, but the transfer failed to materialise because Tottenham could not find a buyer for Richarlison.

Atlético Madrid were also reportedly interested in Gouiri, with the report suggesting that the Marseille forward could leave the club during the January transfer window.

However, it remains uncertain whether Tottenham will revive their interest when the transfer market reopens.

Why Gouiri might not be Tottenham’s priority

Gouiri has enjoyed an impressive start to the new campaign, scoring five goals and registering two assists in eight Ligue 1 appearances.

Despite his productivity, the Algerian is not a traditional centre-forward. His playing style is arguably closer to that of Omar Marmoush, even though he regularly leads the attack for Marseille.

Omar Marmoush’s Premier League statistics (2026/27)

– Appearances: 7
– Minutes played: 517
– Goals: 1
– Assists: 0
– Shots: 9
– Shots on target: 4
– Average rating: 6.73

Given Tottenham’s struggles in front of goal, the club may prefer a more physically imposing striker who can occupy defenders, dominate inside the penalty area and provide a consistent goal threat.

Several forwards linked with Spurs in recent weeks fit that description, suggesting that a traditional number nine could be higher on their January shopping list.

Although Gouiri remains an attractive option because of his relationship with De Zerbi and his recent performances, Tottenham’s recruitment priorities may ultimately determine whether they return for the Marseille attacker.
