Mathys Tel fires France U21s to victory with stunning hat-trick

Mathys Tel has ended the international break in spectacular fashion, scoring a hat-trick as France Under-21s thrashed Switzerland 7-1 in their final Euro 2027 qualifying match.

The Tottenham forward was one of the standout players of the night as France finished their qualification campaign in style. France had already secured their place at next summer’s European Under-21 Championship, but they showed no signs of taking their final fixture lightly. (Tottenham Hotspur)

Tel started the game as France’s central striker and opened the scoring after only 10 minutes. He continued to cause problems for Switzerland’s defence before doubling France’s advantage just before half-time, lifting the ball over goalkeeper Silas Huber from inside the penalty area.

The 21-year-old then completed his hat-trick in the 59th minute with an excellent finish from outside the box, curling the ball beyond Huber to put the result beyond doubt.

It was Tel’s second career hat-trick for France’s Under-21 side and took his tally for the qualifying campaign to eight goals. (Tottenham Hotspur)

The performance was particularly significant because Tel had already played an important role in France securing qualification. He came off the bench against Luxembourg and scored the decisive goal in a 3-2 victory, helping France finish top of their qualifying group. (Tottenham Hotspur)

His latest three-goal performance also saw him reach a major personal milestone. Tel moved to 17 goals for France U21s, putting him level with former France youngster Odsonne Édouard as the joint-highest scorer in the modern history of the French Under-21 team. (L’Équipe)

For Tottenham, the timing of Tel’s performance will be particularly encouraging. The forward has struggled to find the net for Spurs this season, registering three assists in 10 appearances without scoring. (Tottenham Hotspur)

His international form therefore gives him a confidence boost ahead of his return to club football. Tottenham will hope that the goals he produced for France can translate into Premier League performances and, importantly, goals for the north London club.

Tel’s hat-trick was also the highlight of France’s 7-1 demolition of Switzerland. The result ended France’s qualification campaign on a high and demonstrated the attacking quality available to the young French side. (L’Équipe)

With Tottenham’s fixtures resuming, attention will now turn to whether Tel can carry this momentum back to Spurs. After showing his finishing ability, composure and confidence with France, he will be looking to make a similar impact for Roberto De Zerbi’s side.

The international break has therefore given Tel an ideal opportunity to rebuild confidence. Tottenham supporters will now be hoping the Frenchman’s impressive scoring run continues when he returns to club action.
