Liverpool reject idea of selling Florian Wirtz as January interest grows

Liverpool are reportedly preparing for clubs to make approaches for Florian Wirtz when the January transfer window opens, but the club’s current position is that the Germany international is not for sale.

Wirtz has had a difficult start to the 2026/27 campaign. After Liverpool invested up to £116 million to sign him from Bayer Leverkusen, expectations were extremely high, but his attacking numbers have not yet reached the level expected. The report says he has started all four of Liverpool’s Premier League matches this season and has registered one assist in five competitive appearances, while going 12 matches for club and country without scoring.

Despite those struggles, manager Andoni Iraola continues to view Wirtz as an important part of his plans. The manager has publicly stressed that Wirtz’s contribution should not be judged solely by goals and assists, with Liverpool still trying to find the tactical role that allows the midfielder to have his biggest influence.

Bayern Munich keeping an eye on the situation

According to the report, Bayern Munich are among the clubs believed to retain an interest in Wirtz. Liverpool reportedly expect potential offers in January but are prepared to reject them rather than allow the 23-year-old to leave after only a relatively short period at Anfield.

There have nevertheless been positive signs in Wirtz’s performances. In Liverpool’s Champions League campaign, UEFA statistics cited in the report show that he completed 45 of 48 passes, a 94% completion rate, including eight passes into the attacking third.

Wirtz’s first season at Liverpool also produced 15 goal contributions in 49 appearances, although that was below the standards he had established during his time in Germany. The report argues that Liverpool’s bigger challenge is finding the right tactical environment for him rather than immediately considering his future at the club.

For now, the message from Liverpool is clear: interest may arrive in January, but the club does not currently intend to sell Florian Wirtz.
