Tottenham Hotspur are set to complete four transfer deals on Wednesday and could round off the day by sealing a record-breaking fifth signing.
It has already been a hectic summer at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Roberto De Zerbi overseeing a major squad overhaul following back-to-back 17th-place Premier League finishes. The club is determined to strengthen significantly ahead of the new campaign.
July 1 is a key date in the football calendar. Not only do player contracts officially expire on June 30, but it also marks the beginning of a new financial period under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). As a result, many clubs either rushed to complete sales before the deadline or delayed new signings until the new accounting period began.
Tottenham will officially welcome three new arrivals on Wednesday. Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka have now reached the end of their contracts with Liverpool, Bournemouth and Burnley respectively, allowing their Spurs contracts to become active. They join Jan Paul van Hecke, whose £52 million transfer had already been completed.
There will also be one confirmed departure. Alejo Veliz will officially complete his permanent move to Brazilian club Bahia after his loan spell at Rosario Central expired on June 30. The transfer is worth an initial £7.7 million (€9 million), with a further £863,000 (€1 million) in performance-related bonuses and a 20% sell-on clause.
Spurs fans are also eagerly awaiting confirmation of what could become the club’s fifth transfer of the day. Tottenham are closing in on an £85 million deal for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes after agreeing a fee with their London rivals despite competition from Manchester United.
With West Ham granting permission for the Portuguese international to undergo his medical, the transfer could be officially completed before the end of Wednesday, subject to international clearance and the approval of his work permit.
If finalised, Fernandes’ arrival would cap off a remarkable day of transfer business for Tottenham, with further arrivals and departures expected as De Zerbi continues reshaping his squad for the season ahead.
