Cristian Romero is expected to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Spurs have already enjoyed a busy transfer window under Roberto De Zerbi, adding six new players to the squad. Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka arrived on free transfers, while Jan Paul van Hecke joined in a deal worth around £52 million. Tottenham also smashed their transfer record twice by signing Mateus Fernandes for £85 million and Sandro Tonali for £100 million.
Although De Zerbi remains eager to strengthen his attack before the new campaign, Tottenham now appear set to lose their captain.
Romero, widely regarded as a world-class defender, has long been tipped to leave north London after becoming frustrated with the club’s inability to consistently compete at the highest level.
Tottenham anticipated his departure by signing two new centre-backs earlier this summer, and Romano has now revealed that negotiations over Romero’s exit are underway.
Serie A champions Inter Milan have begun discussions over a move for the Argentine international and are also monitoring Djed Spence. However, they face competition from La Liga champions Barcelona, who are also interested in signing the 28-year-old. The financial demands of the deal are currently proving to be a major obstacle for the Spanish club.
Despite that, Romero’s departure is now viewed as inevitable, with all parties expected to work towards completing an agreement once he returns from the World Cup.
Inside Tottenham, Romero’s exit has been anticipated for some time. Although he remains a respected leader in the dressing room, his public criticism of the club’s ownership made it clear he was unhappy. His season-ending injury also meant he missed the crucial final weeks of the campaign as Spurs secured Premier League survival.
With replacements already in place, Tottenham are now focused on securing the best possible transfer fee before finalising the captain’s exit.
