De Zerbi targets £12m Villarreal star as potential Porro replacement

Tottenham join race to sign Villarreal star Alex Freeman

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keeping a close eye on Villarreal defender Alex Freeman as they consider strengthening their defensive options ahead of a potential transfer.

According to Football Insider, Spurs have been monitoring the 22-year-old following his impressive performances in Spain, where he has quickly established himself as an important member of Villarreal’s squad.

Freeman is among the emerging talents in the United States national team setup and has attracted attention with his development since moving to Europe from MLS side Orlando City in January.

Despite being relatively new to European football, the defender has adapted remarkably well to life in LaLiga. He has featured in 10 of Villarreal’s 11 league matches this season and has also played in all three of their Champions League fixtures.

His consistent performances have reportedly caught Tottenham’s attention, with Roberto De Zerbi potentially looking to bring him to north London.

### Tottenham face competition from Manchester United and Manchester City

Football Insider claims Tottenham are not alone in their pursuit of Freeman, with Manchester United and Manchester City also monitoring the youngster.

Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi is believed to be considering changes to his defensive department, particularly with uncertainty surrounding Pedro Porro’s long-term future at the club.

Freeman has emerged as a possible option, thanks to his versatility and ability to operate in different positions across the backline.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke confirmed Tottenham’s interest while highlighting the competition they face.

He said:

“Tottenham are another team that are looking at Freeman. Manchester United, as they’re looking to rebuild their defence, are another side that are looking at Alex Freeman. He’s a great player. Great versatility. He can play anywhere across the back line.”

O’Rourke also praised the defender’s progress in Spain, pointing to his experience of competing in both LaLiga and the Champions League.

### Freeman could be a bargain replacement for Pedro Porro

Freeman’s performances this season help explain why several Premier League clubs are keeping tabs on him.

According to FOTMOB, the American defender has registered an impressive 91.6% passing accuracy, created nine chances and averaged 7.58 successful duels per LaLiga appearance.

Those numbers highlight his technical ability, composure in possession and strength in individual battles.

With Transfermarkt valuing him at approximately £12 million, Freeman could represent an affordable option for Tottenham if Porro eventually leaves.

However, Spurs would need to overcome competition from both Manchester clubs to secure his signature.
