Liverpool have suffered another injury concern after Cody Gakpo was forced off during the Netherlands’ 2–1 Nations League victory over Serbia on Sunday, September 27.
Gakpo started the match but lasted only 17 minutes after his ankle was caught during a challenge involving Serbia midfielder Saša Lukić. He initially tried to continue, but the discomfort proved too much and he was replaced by Ruben van Bommel.
Liverpool confirmed on September 28 that Gakpo had withdrawn from the Netherlands squad and would return to the club for further assessment by Liverpool’s medical staff at the AXA Training Centre. He will miss the Netherlands’ remaining two matches during the current international period.
There is currently no official Liverpool recovery timetable. However, Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink has reported that tests in Eindhoven indicate Gakpo could be out for several weeks. That report would put his availability for Liverpool’s next Premier League match against Manchester City on October 11 in doubt.
The timing is particularly significant because Gakpo has made a strong start to the 2026/27 campaign, with two goals and four assists reported from his opening appearances. Liverpool are also dealing with an injury to Alexander Isak, who has returned from Sweden duty with what the club described as a minor injury.
Liverpool’s first match after the international break is against Manchester City at Anfield on October 11, so further medical assessments will determine whether Gakpo can recover in time.
Bottom line: Gakpo has officially left the Netherlands camp with an ankle injury and is returning to Liverpool for assessment. “Several weeks” out has been reported, but Liverpool have not yet confirmed the exact length of his absence.
