GRAHAM BARBER REVEALS HIS VERDICT ON RYAN GRAVENBERCH’S CONTROVERSIAL RED CARD!

Graham Barber Delivers His Verdict on Ryan Gravenberch’s Controversial Red Card

Former Premier League referee Graham Barber has backed referee Chris Kavanagh’s decision to send off Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch during the Reds’ disappointing 3–0 defeat to Manchester City at Anfield.

However, Barber believes the midfielder’s first yellow card was the main reason the dismissal became such a controversial talking point.

How Gravenberch Was Sent Off

Liverpool were competing strongly against Manchester City, with Gravenberch producing an impressive performance in midfield. The match remained goalless until the 62nd minute, when a crucial refereeing decision changed the direction of the contest.

The Dutch midfielder received his second yellow card after fouling Jeremy Doku to stop a dangerous Manchester City counterattack. His dismissal left Liverpool with just ten players on the pitch and gave the visitors a significant advantage.

Graham Barber Explains His Position

Barber believes Kavanagh was justified in showing Gravenberch a second yellow card because the midfielder had deliberately stopped a dangerous attacking opportunity.

Nevertheless, the former referee questioned whether the Liverpool star should have received his first booking in the first place.

Gravenberch had been cautioned shortly after half-time following a challenge on Manchester City midfielder Elliot Anderson. According to Barber, referees must be careful when issuing yellow cards, particularly when an early booking could have serious consequences later in the match.

Barber explained that although the sending-off was difficult to challenge under the rules, the situation might have been different if the first yellow card had never been shown.

He also suggested that reversing the order of the two incidents would have created an interesting debate about the referee’s decisions.

In his view, the second challenge was more clearly deserving of a yellow card, while the first booking was the incident that raised the biggest questions.

Manchester City Punish Liverpool After the Dismissal

Gravenberch’s departure proved costly for Liverpool as Manchester City quickly took control of the game.

Erling Haaland broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, just three minutes after the midfielder was sent off. Doku then extended City’s advantage in the 68th minute with an impressive finish.

Rayan Cherki completed the scoring in the 78th minute, securing a convincing 3–0 victory for the visitors.

Liverpool had remained competitive before the dismissal, but playing with ten men made the challenge significantly harder. Manchester City took full advantage of their numerical superiority to claim all three points at Anfield.

Final Verdict: Was Gravenberch Unfairly Sent Off?

Barber’s assessment highlights the difference between the two yellow-card incidents. While he believes the second booking was justified, he has questioned the decision that initially put Gravenberch at risk of being sent off.

The incident has fuelled debate among Liverpool supporters and football pundits, with many questioning whether the referee should have been more cautious with his first booking.

Ultimately, Gravenberch’s dismissal became a decisive moment in Liverpool’s defeat, allowing Manchester City to take control and secure a comfortable victory.
