Liverpool are continuing their search for a new sporting director following Richard Hughes’ departure for Al-Hilal. According to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas, the club are seriously considering Julian Ward for the vacant position.
Ward previously served as Liverpool’s sporting director from June 2022 to May 2023 and is currently Fenway Sports Group’s technical director. During his previous spell, he was involved in deals for players including Darwin Núñez and Cody Gakpo, while also working on the arrivals of Alexis Mac Allister and Luis Díaz.
Liverpool are also reportedly considering bringing in another senior football executive to work alongside Ward, potentially as a co-sporting director or technical director. One of the names being discussed is Brentford technical director Lee Dykes, who has already held talks with Liverpool as part of the search.
Dykes has been involved in Brentford’s recruitment since joining the club in 2019 and became technical director in 2022. Liverpool are reportedly examining several internal and external candidates, with FSG president Mike Gordon leading the process.
No final decision has been announced yet, so Liverpool could ultimately appoint Ward, another internal candidate, an external candidate, or potentially make more than one appointment.
