Liverpool are reportedly preparing for renewed interest in Florian Wirtz when the January transfer window opens, with Bayern Munich among the clubs monitoring the 23-year-old. However, the report says Liverpool remain determined to keep the Germany international at Anfield and would likely reject an approach.
Wirtz joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025 for an initial £100 million, with the deal potentially rising to £116 million. His performances have come under scrutiny after a slow start to his second season, which has encouraged speculation that other European clubs could test Liverpool’s resolve.
Bayern Munich keeping an eye on Wirtz
According to the report, Bayern were serious contenders for Wirtz before Liverpool secured his signing and have continued to monitor his situation. AS reportedly expects Liverpool to receive offers in January, while TEAMtalk has previously reported that Bayern would be prepared to act if Liverpool ever decided to sell.
The speculation is partly linked to Wirtz’s recent attacking output. He registered 15 goal contributions in 49 appearances during his first Liverpool season and has recorded one assist in five competitive appearances so far this campaign. The report also notes that he has gone without a goal in his last 12 competitive matches for club and country.
Liverpool still want to keep him
The report says Liverpool’s position is that Wirtz remains part of the club’s plans. Manager Andoni Iraola is reportedly still experimenting with his role and trying to find the position and tactical setup that will get the best from him.
Wirtz was particularly effective at Leverkusen when operating between the lines, combining around the penalty area and moving into central attacking areas. The report argues that Liverpool have not always given him the same platform.
Former Liverpool midfielder Vladimir Smicer has also reportedly urged the club not to sell Wirtz to Bayern, believing the German midfielder can still become an important player for Liverpool.
