Tottenham fans slam Mateus Fernandes after Aston Villa defeat

Tottenham’s difficult start to the Premier League season continued on Saturday as Spurs were beaten 3–2 by Aston Villa at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The result leaves Tottenham with just two points from their opening five league matches, keeping them in the relegation zone.

The match began positively for Spurs, who created several chances in the opening stages. However, Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced a series of important saves to keep Tottenham from taking the lead.

Tottenham were eventually punished just before half-time. With Micky van de Ven temporarily off the pitch receiving treatment, Spurs failed to deal with a dangerous Villa attack and Johan Manzambi finished from close range to give the visitors the lead.

One of the main talking points after the match was the performance of Mateus Fernandes. The midfielder started the game but was replaced at half-time by Mohammed Kudus. Reports highlighted criticism from some Tottenham supporters, who questioned Fernandes’ performance and De Zerbi’s decision to deploy him in an attacking role.

Fernandes joined Tottenham in July and had previously been praised by the club and De Zerbi for his technical ability, intensity and intelligence. Tottenham described him as a player capable of progressing the ball and contributing defensively.

After the break, Villa became increasingly dangerous. Nicolas Jackson doubled their advantage in the 67th minute after combining with Manzambi before lifting the ball over Van de Ven and finishing clinically. Emi Buendía then produced a spectacular long-range strike to make it 3–0.

Tottenham did manage a late response. Conor Gallagher scored Spurs’ first Premier League goal of the season, while Jean Paul van Hecke added another in stoppage time. Mohammed Kudus had also appeared to score earlier in the second half, but the goal was ruled out for offside in the build-up.

Despite the late comeback attempt, Villa held on for their first Premier League victory of the campaign. Tottenham supporters booed the team at full-time, while the defeat increased the pressure surrounding Roberto De Zerbi and his new-look squad.

The Sport Digest report therefore focuses on the reaction from Spurs supporters to Fernandes’ display, with some fans expressing strong frustration about the new signing and questioning his role in De Zerbi’s system.
