Tottenham 2–3 Aston Villa: De Zerbi reacts after another painful defeat

Tottenham suffered another Premier League setback on Saturday, losing 3–2 to Aston Villa at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The defeat means Spurs are still without a league win after five matches.

Spurs started brightly and created opportunities, but Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki made several important saves. Johan Manzambi then gave Villa the lead in first-half stoppage time.

Villa extended their advantage after the break through Nicolas Jackson, before Emiliano Buendia made it 3–0 with a long-range strike. Tottenham eventually got on the scoresheet through Conor Gallagher, ending their wait for a Premier League goal, while Jan Paul van Hecke added another late goal. It was not enough to rescue a point.

The result has increased the scrutiny around Roberto De Zerbi, particularly after Tottenham’s difficult opening to the campaign. The manager had previously said Spurs needed to improve in “all areas” and stressed that his players still had his full confidence.

De Zerbi’s immediate challenge is now to use the international break to address Tottenham’s attacking and defensive problems and find a way to turn periods of good possession and pressure into results.
