Liverpool’s transfer window is finally showing signs of momentum after weeks of speculation, stalled negotiations and little meaningful progress. Supporters have grown frustrated, expecting a major rebuild but instead watching the club fall behind while rivals strengthened.
Sporting director Richard Hughes is also under increasing pressure. Reports linking him with a move to Al Hilal suggest this could be his final transfer window at Anfield, making the coming weeks crucial in shaping his legacy.
Hughes earned praise for last summer’s record-breaking spending, but Liverpool’s recruitment ultimately lacked balance. While money was invested, key weaknesses were left unaddressed, leaving the squad overloaded in some areas and short in others. Those issues eventually contributed to Arne Slot losing his job.
New manager Andoni Iraola has now inherited the challenge of rebuilding Liverpool, with the task proving even greater than expected. The squad has become thinner following the departures of several experienced players, yet only Victor Muñoz has arrived since the window opened.
Replacing influential figures like Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson was always expected to require significant investment, but Liverpool’s business has so far fallen short of supporters’ expectations. Strengthening the attack alone will not be enough, with reinforcements still urgently needed in defence and midfield.
Centre-back has emerged as a particular concern, with teenagers Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe currently the only fit senior options. Despite their potential, relying on two inexperienced youngsters across multiple competitions would be a major gamble.
There is, however, growing optimism over Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola. The Reds have stepped up their efforts to land the PSG winger, whose arrival would provide a major boost to Iraola’s attacking options following Salah’s exit.
Time is running short, though, and Liverpool know one signing alone will not solve their problems. Hughes must move quickly if he wants to leave the club in a stronger position before the transfer window closes.
Encouragingly for Liverpool, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Barcola is keen on a move to Anfield and that there is “no doubt” about his desire to join the club. The situation has drawn comparisons to previous transfer pursuits involving Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, both of whom were eager to join Liverpool before eventually completing their moves.
If Romano’s update proves accurate, Liverpool’s pursuit of Barcola now appears to be a question of when, rather than if, the talented French winger will make the switch to Anfield.
