Tottenham Hotspur are desperate to rediscover the glory days of Luka Modric, Christian Eriksen, Gareth Bale and the unforgettable run to the Champions League final under Mauricio Pochettino. Back then, Spurs were competing with Europe’s elite and had Harry Kane leading the line. Fast forward to now, and the club have endured yet another relegation battle — something simply unacceptable for a club of this stature.
Daniel Levy may have received criticism over the years, but many believe Tottenham were run far more effectively in previous eras than they have been under Johan Lange and Vinai Venkatesham this season. After narrowly surviving the drop, Spurs know major changes are needed if they are to climb back toward the European places.
The arrival of Roberto De Zerbi has already injected fresh optimism into North London, but the Italian manager now needs strong backing in the transfer market. Tottenham are already pushing ahead with moves for Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi and Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson on free transfers as they look to rebuild a fragile defence.
However, midfield remains another major concern. Injuries to Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall disrupted the season, while Archie Gray was often forced out of position. Yves Bissouma continues to struggle for consistency and there are still question marks surrounding Conor Gallagher despite his January arrival.
Now, Spurs appear to have identified Fiorentina star Nicolo Fagioli as a priority target. Reports from Italy claim Tottenham have already made contact with the Serie A club and are currently leading the race for the 25-year-old midfielder, who could cost around £35m.
Fagioli is viewed as the type of midfielder Spurs desperately lack — someone capable of driving through the centre of the pitch, progressing possession and dictating the tempo. The Italian averaged more progressive carries per 90 minutes than any Tottenham midfielder last season and is also among Europe’s elite when it comes to progressive passing and key passes.
Highly technical, calm in possession and capable of unlocking defences with his passing range, Fagioli has even drawn comparisons to Luka Modric and Andrea Pirlo. His ability to carry the ball forward while keeping play ticking over could bring much-needed energy and creativity to Tottenham’s midfield.
For Spurs, this summer feels like a turning point. After years of decline, they are hoping De Zerbi and signings like Fagioli can finally help restore the club to where it believes it belongs.
