Sandro Tonali Opens Up About Adjusting to Life in London
Sandro Tonali has opened up about his experience of adapting to life in London following his high-profile move to Tottenham Hotspur, admitting that his wife was more familiar with the city than he was when they first arrived.
The Italian midfielder completed a £100 million transfer from Newcastle United to Tottenham in July, making him the club’s record signing. The move came despite Tonali failing to score a Premier League goal during the previous campaign.
His arrival was part of Tottenham’s major £340 million rebuild after the club finished 17th in the Premier League for two consecutive seasons.
Before deciding on Tottenham, Tonali had reportedly attracted attention from several major Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester City. However, Spurs eventually secured his signature, with the midfielder also keen on experiencing life in London.
Tonali is reportedly earning around £275,000 per week at Tottenham. His return to Newcastle has already proved difficult emotionally, with the midfielder receiving a hostile reception from the home supporters when Spurs visited St James’ Park. Newcastle ultimately won the game 2-0.
Tonali discusses life in London
Speaking to Soccer Bible, Tonali explained that moving from Newcastle to London represented a major change. However, he said the transition has been made easier by the warm welcome he received and the support of his family.
The Tottenham midfielder described London as a much busier city and very different from Newcastle. Despite that, he said the people around him have helped him settle in and feel comfortable.
Tonali also revealed that having his wife by his side has been particularly helpful because she already had a good understanding of London before his arrival.
His message to aspiring footballers
Tonali also shared an encouraging message for young players hoping to make it in professional football.
The midfielder urged youngsters to continue believing in their ambitions regardless of how difficult the journey becomes. He used his own career as an example, explaining that he dreamed of playing in Serie A before eventually reaching the Premier League.
Having now experienced English football himself, Tonali considers the Premier League to be the best league in the world.
His advice to young footballers is simple: dream as big as possible, stay committed to those ambitions and never stop chasing them throughout their careers.
