Liverpool receive worrying Cody Gakpo injury update

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has provided a concerning update on Cody Gakpo ahead of the Reds’ Premier League meeting with Fulham.

Gakpo was already absent from Liverpool’s Champions League squad for the 2–1 victory over Atlético Madrid, with the club monitoring an issue that has kept the Netherlands international out of action. Iraola admitted that Liverpool are still unsure whether the forward will be fit enough to feature against Fulham.

The uncertainty comes at an important time for Liverpool. Gakpo had started the season in impressive form and has become an important attacking option under Iraola, so another absence would leave the manager with fewer choices in the final third.

There was also concern surrounding Bradley Barcola during the Atlético Madrid victory after the £123 million signing was substituted. However, Iraola played down fears of a serious injury, explaining that Barcola was suffering from cramp rather than a major muscle problem.

Barcola had made his first Liverpool start against Atlético after coming off the bench in the victory over Ipswich. Despite missing good chances, his pace and movement were viewed positively, and Iraola defended the winger’s performance.

So, while Liverpool appear to have avoided a serious Barcola injury, Gakpo’s availability remains the bigger concern heading into the Fulham game.

Liverpool will hope the Dutchman recovers in time, but Iraola’s latest comments suggest that a final decision may have to wait until closer to kick-off.
