Jordan Pickford was forced off with an injury during the first half of Everton’s 2-1 defeat to Burnley at Goodison Park.

The goalkeeper had conceded twice to brilliant goals by Chris Wood and Dwight McNeil as the Toffees were stunned by the visitors.

The England international tried to battle through the pain but had to come off before the break as Joao Virginia came on for his debut.

“A blow for Pickford and England, but more worryingly in the short term for Everton,” talkSPORT’s commentator at Goodison Park, Mark Wilson, said.

Pickford could hardly be blamed, though, as they were two magnificent efforts by Burnley.

Tom Davies was dispossessed by Josh Brownhill deep inside his own half and he sent Dwight McNeil racing down the left to cut a cross back for Chris Wood to clip home a shot past the unsighted Pickford

Dwight McNeil added a second when he skipped past the tackle of Allan and advanced unchallenged to curl a superb left-footed effort into the top corner.

Gudmundsson almost made it three when he hit a post with a low shot from distance, with Pickford hurting himself in the process.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin got one back for Everton to make it 2-1 at the break.

It will be another possible injury headache for England boss Gareth Southgate as he saw striker Patrick Bamford limp off earlier in the day.

Pickford has been the number one choice for Southgate throughout his England tenure and he may be forced to look at other options for the upcoming international break.

Burnley continued to cause problems for Everton in the second half with the debut goalkeeper being forced into making some good saves.

The three points gives Sean Dyche’s side a seven point breathing space to the relegation zone.
