Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has delivered a furious reaction to the controversial refereeing decision that denied his team a penalty during their 1-0 Premier League defeat to Arsenal at Anfield.
The biggest talking point of Sunday’s encounter came in the first half when Liverpool striker Alexander Isak appeared to have his shirt pulled by Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber inside the penalty area.
Isak was attempting to connect with a dangerous cross but was prevented from reaching the ball after Timber grabbed his shirt. Despite the obvious contact, referee Andy Madley allowed play to continue, while VAR official Stuart Attwell decided there was insufficient reason to overturn the decision.
Iraola was left frustrated, particularly because he believed Isak had a genuine opportunity to score before being held back.
Iraola sends strong message to referees
Speaking after the match, Iraola questioned why his striker was not awarded a penalty simply because he refused to go to ground.
The Liverpool manager suggested that players who remain on their feet after being fouled are sometimes punished for trying to play honestly.
He even admitted that he would consider telling Isak to fall to the ground the next time he experiences similar contact inside the penalty area.
Iraola explained that if Isak had gone down, he believed the referee would almost certainly have pointed to the penalty spot.
He described the situation as frustrating and criticised the inconsistency surrounding decisions of this nature.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk joins the protest
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk also expressed his disappointment with the decision.
The Dutch defender questioned how VAR could fail to intervene when so many cameras were available to review the incident.
Van Dijk pointed out that the shirt pull was visible and suggested that similar situations had resulted in penalties on other occasions.
He admitted that Liverpool were disappointed to lose the match but congratulated Arsenal on their victory.
Another penalty appeal adds to Liverpool’s frustration
Liverpool also appealed for another penalty after Cody Gakpo went down under pressure from Christos Tzolis.
Although Iraola believed there was sustained holding, he acknowledged the argument that Gakpo might not have reached the ball.
However, he questioned why that reasoning could be used against Gakpo but not considered when Isak was prevented from reaching the cross.
Arsenal punish Liverpool at Anfield
Meanwhile, Arsenal made the most of their opportunity, securing a valuable 1-0 victory.
Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute after Liverpool lost possession while attempting to play out from the back.
Liverpool pushed hard for an equaliser, with Florian Wirtz striking the crossbar, but Arsenal defended resolutely to protect their advantage.
The victory also marked Arsenal’s first Premier League win at Anfield in 14 years.
VAR controversy continues to dominate discussions
The controversial Isak incident is expected to generate further debate about refereeing standards and VAR intervention in the Premier League.
Several former players and pundits questioned why the penalty was not awarded, with some arguing that Isak should not have needed to exaggerate the contact to attract the referee’s attention.
For Iraola, however, the biggest frustration is that honest players could be disadvantaged for trying to remain on their feet.
Liverpool will now have to put the disappointment behind them and concentrate on their next fixture.
