Hansi Flick could affect Liverpool’s £47.3m Ronald Araújo deal

Liverpool’s hopes of signing Ronald Araújo permanently could depend heavily on Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, despite reports that the Reds are increasingly interested in activating their purchase option.

Araújo joined Liverpool on a season-long loan from Barcelona in August. The agreement includes an option for Liverpool to buy the 27-year-old for approximately €55m (£47.3m) at the end of the season. Liverpool are also covering his salary during the loan, with the defender reportedly taking a pay cut to make the move happen.

Araújo has quickly become an important part of Andoni Iraola’s defence, featuring regularly since his arrival. Recent reports have suggested Liverpool could seriously consider using the £47.3m option if his performances remain strong.

However, a new report from TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, as relayed by Empire of the Kop, says Araújo’s future could ultimately depend on whether Flick believes the defender still has a future at Barcelona. Araújo reportedly does not currently consider his Barcelona career finished, meaning a return to Camp Nou remains possible if Flick wants him back.

Flick was involved in the decision to allow Araújo to leave in the first place. When the loan was arranged, Flick said Araújo is a very good player but that his qualities did not completely fit the style Barcelona wanted to play. Barcelona therefore allowed him to seek a new challenge while Liverpool provided him with an opportunity to rebuild his form.

There is also competition for places at Barcelona. Pau Cubarsí, Eric García, Andreas Christensen and Gerard Martín are among the defenders available to Flick, while Jules Koundé can also play centrally. That could make Barcelona’s eventual decision on Araújo complicated.

The key point is that Liverpool’s £47.3m option does not guarantee the transfer will happen. Liverpool can decide whether to exercise the option, but Barcelona’s plans and Araújo’s own situation will also matter. If Flick decides Araújo still has a role at Barcelona, Liverpool’s plans could become more complicated.

For now, Araújo’s performances at Liverpool over the remainder of the 2026/27 season will be particularly important, with his long-term future still unresolved.

In short: Liverpool have a £47.3m option, but Flick’s view of Araújo’s future at Barcelona could influence whether the defender eventually stays at Anfield permanently.
