Liverpool increasingly convinced by defender after instant Premier League impact

The Uruguay international joined Liverpool from Barcelona on a season-long loan last summer, with the Reds negotiating an option to make the move permanent for approximately €55 million (£46m–£47m).

Araujo has settled into English football impressively and quickly become an important member of the squad. Although he is primarily a centre-back, his ability to operate at right-back has made him a valuable option for Liverpool.

Liverpool Ready to Make Araujo’s Move Permanent

According to Marca, Liverpool are prepared to trigger Araujo’s purchase clause if he maintains his current level of performance.

The report follows similar claims from Football Insider, which previously stated that Liverpool would postpone their final decision until later in the season. However, the club are reportedly willing to offer him a permanent deal if he continues to impress.

Araujo has already made 10 appearances for Liverpool, establishing himself as the preferred option at right-back despite his natural preference for playing in central defence.

His performances have also attracted praise from head coach Andoni Iraola, who expressed his satisfaction with the defender in September.

“I like his spirit. I’m very happy for him,” Iraola said.

The Liverpool boss also highlighted Araujo’s versatility, physical strength and willingness to take on different defensive responsibilities whenever required.

Why £46m Could Prove to Be Good Business for Liverpool

Liverpool’s biggest concern is unlikely to be whether Araujo has the quality to succeed. The defender has already shown that he can cope with the intensity of the Premier League while providing defensive reliability, aerial dominance and tactical flexibility.

Instead, the decision centres on his age and the financial implications of a permanent transfer.

Araujo will turn 28 in March, meaning a fee approaching £47 million would represent a significant investment in a player with potentially limited resale value compared with younger alternatives. His wages could also increase the overall cost of the deal.

Nevertheless, his proven ability could make the investment worthwhile.

Liverpool have already seen how effectively Araujo fits into Iraola’s system. He understands the team’s demands, has adapted to his surroundings and can cover multiple positions across the defence.

That familiarity significantly reduces the uncertainty associated with recruiting a new player for a similar fee.

If Araujo continues to deliver consistently, Liverpool could conclude that spending £46 million on a defender who has already demonstrated his quality at Anfield is a smarter decision than investing a comparable amount in an untested replacement.
