James Maddison may have grabbed the headlines with his impressive return, but another Tottenham player is quickly making a strong case for becoming one of the club’s most important players under Roberto De Zerbi.
That man is Mohammed Kudus, whose outstanding performance against Coventry City demonstrated why Spurs could build their attacking future around him.
Tottenham finally gave their supporters something to celebrate on Monday, October 19, securing a crucial 3-1 victory over Coventry City to claim their first three points of the 2026/27 Premier League campaign.
After a difficult start to the season, the victory provided a much-needed confidence boost and lifted Spurs out of the relegation zone.
Maddison made an immediate impact by opening the scoring with a brilliant finish. However, Coventry responded after the break through Jack Rudoni, briefly threatening to spoil Tottenham’s evening.
Fortunately, Omar Marmoush restored Spurs’ lead before Ben Davies added another goal to seal the victory.
While Maddison deserved praise for his goal, Kudus arguably delivered one of the most impressive all-round performances of the night.
KUDUS’ INCREDIBLE 97% STATISTIC
According to FotMob statistics cited in the report, the Ghanaian international completed an astonishing 97% of his passes against Coventry.
He also completed two of his three attempted dribbles, created two chances and produced seven line-breaking passes.
Those numbers demonstrate that Kudus offers much more than pace and individual skill. His ability to carry the ball forward, beat defenders and find teammates in dangerous positions gives Tottenham another dimension in attack.
His direct style also creates space for players such as Maddison and Marmoush to exploit.
HIS CONTRIBUTION WENT BEYOND ATTACKING
Kudus was equally willing to contribute defensively.
The 26-year-old recorded five recoveries, two interceptions and two clearances. He also entered 10 duels and won two fouls, highlighting his determination to help the team in different phases of the game.
For De Zerbi, having an attacker who combines creativity, physical strength and defensive commitment could prove invaluable as Tottenham attempt to turn their season around.
COULD KUDUS BE THE KEY TO SPURS’ TOP-SIX AMBITIONS?
Maddison brings creativity, Marmoush offers a goal threat, and Kulusevski provides another attacking option. However, Kudus possesses the ability to change a game through his dribbling, movement and forward passing.
When opponents concentrate on stopping him, other Tottenham attackers can benefit from the additional space.
The challenge for De Zerbi is to build a consistent attacking system that allows Kudus to maximise his strengths while maintaining the team’s balance.
Tottenham’s victory over Coventry is only one step towards recovery, and there is still plenty of work to do.
Nevertheless, if Kudus continues delivering performances of this quality, he could become a central figure in Spurs’ push up the Premier League table.
Maddison might have stolen the headlines, but Kudus has given Tottenham another reason to believe in their future.
