‘HE’S NOT LIKE THE OTHERS’: EX-TOTTENHAM DEFENDER CRISTIAN ROMERO RECEIVES HIGH PRAISE AT ATLÉTICO MADRID

‘HE IS DIFFERENT’: FORMER TOTTENHAM STAR CRISTIAN ROMERO EARNS MAJOR PRAISE AT ATLÉTICO MADRID

Cristian Romero is already making a strong impression at Atlético Madrid following his summer departure from Tottenham Hotspur, with manager Diego Simeone expressing his admiration for the Argentine defender.

The centre-back has quickly become an important figure at his new club, showing the leadership, defensive strength and fighting mentality that convinced Atlético to pursue his signature for several transfer windows.

Simeone reveals why Romero stands out

Simeone has made it clear that Romero possesses qualities that separate him from other defenders. The Atlético manager believes the 28-year-old brings personality, authority and leadership to the team, alongside his ability to perform at the highest level.

The Argentine coach had wanted to bring Romero to Madrid for some time, and his long-standing interest finally resulted in a transfer from Tottenham during the summer.

According to reports, Simeone said Romero is different because he has presence and leadership qualities that cannot simply be taught. He also highlighted the defender’s humility and respect for his teammates, despite his strong personality on the pitch.

The manager believes Romero is already demonstrating why he deserves an important role at the club, with his performances continuing to justify the confidence placed in him.

Why Atlético wanted the former Spurs captain

Romero spent five seasons at Tottenham after arriving in 2021, establishing himself as one of the club’s key defenders. He was also appointed captain ahead of the 2025/26 campaign following Son Heung-min’s departure.

However, his final season in north London was difficult, with disciplinary problems, suspensions, injuries and disagreements involving the club’s leadership contributing to a turbulent period.

Despite those challenges, Romero remained a highly regarded defender because of his aggressive tackling, ability to anticipate danger and willingness to lead from the back.

His time at Tottenham also included a major achievement when he helped the club win the Europa League in 2025, ending their long wait for a trophy.

Atlético eventually secured his services in a deal reported to be worth around €40 million, including add-ons. Romero subsequently signed a five-year contract that keeps him at the Spanish club until 2031.

A fresh chapter in Spain

Romero’s move to Atlético represents an opportunity to begin a new chapter under a manager who has admired him for years.

Simeone’s demanding style of football places considerable importance on defensive organisation, intensity and commitment — qualities that could make Romero a natural fit for the team.

The defender’s leadership is also expected to strengthen Atlético’s back line as they aim to compete for major honours in Spain and Europe.

For Tottenham, his departure marks the end of a five-year spell that brought both memorable achievements and frustrating moments. For Romero, however, the move offers a chance to establish himself in a new environment and continue developing under one of football’s most demanding managers.

With Simeone already speaking so highly of him, the former Tottenham captain appears to have made a promising start to life in Madrid.
