Liverpool ready to extend Rio Ngumoha contract
Liverpool are increasingly confident that they can secure an improved long-term contract for teenage winger Rio Ngumoha as the club continues to view him as an important part of its future.
The 18-year-old has made remarkable progress since breaking through from the academy. In just over a year, Ngumoha has developed from a promising youth player into a genuine first-team option, while his performances have also brought him into consideration at senior international level.
Liverpool are therefore eager to ensure that one of their most exciting young talents remains committed to the club for the long term.
Liverpool confident of reaching new agreement
According to Football Insider, Liverpool believe an agreement with Ngumoha over improved contract terms can be reached in the coming months.
The youngster’s current deal is due to expire in the summer of 2028, meaning Liverpool are not under immediate pressure to prevent him from leaving. Nevertheless, the club and Ngumoha’s representatives reportedly feel that his existing contract no longer accurately reflects his rapid rise in importance.
Although he has only started one Premier League match this season, Ngumoha remains part of Andoni Iraola’s first-team plans and has continued to make an impression when given opportunities.
His breakthrough campaign last season saw him make history by becoming Liverpool’s youngest-ever goalscorer when he scored a dramatic winning goal against Newcastle United. He subsequently featured in 19 Premier League matches during the season.
Van Dijk highlights Ngumoha’s potential
Liverpool’s belief in Ngumoha is not a recent development.
Following an impressive performance against Wolves earlier this year, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk publicly praised the youngster. The defender described Ngumoha’s display as outstanding and labelled him a “special talent.”
Van Dijk also highlighted the teenager’s speed and ability to take opponents on in one-on-one situations.
Those qualities help explain why Liverpool are keen to make progress on a new contract sooner rather than later.
There is naturally still plenty of development ahead for Ngumoha, and, like most young players, he is likely to experience periods where his performances are less consistent. However, his potential is already clear.
Liverpool have invested heavily in attacking players, but producing a high-level talent internally would be particularly valuable for the club.
A new contract would therefore represent more than simply rewarding Ngumoha for his progress. It would demonstrate Liverpool’s confidence that he can become an important first-team player rather than merely another successful academy graduate.
If his development continues at its current speed, Ngumoha could find himself playing an even bigger role for Liverpool before the end of the season.
