HEUNG-MIN SON BREAKS MAJOR SOUTH KOREAN RECORD

HEUNG-MIN SON MAKES SOUTH KOREAN FOOTBALL HISTORY

Heung-Min Son has added another remarkable achievement to his already outstanding career after becoming the all-time leading goalscorer for the South Korean men’s national team.

The former Tottenham captain reached the historic milestone during South Korea’s friendly against Uzbekistan on Tuesday. Son opened the scoring with a superb free-kick in the sixth minute, taking his international tally to 59 goals.

The goal moved Son ahead of legendary South Korean striker Cha Bum-kun, with whom he had previously been level. The achievement further underlines Son’s incredible importance to South Korean football.

The 34-year-old has already established himself as his country’s most-capped male player, having made 151 international appearances. He has represented South Korea at four World Cups and several Asian Cups while remaining one of the central figures in the national team.

Son’s record-breaking goal came during a strong performance from South Korea, who eventually secured a 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan. Son took another free-kick in the second half that required an excellent save before being substituted in the 71st minute.

Speaking after the match, Son admitted that reaching the record was an emotional moment. He credited his teammates, coaches and supporters for helping him achieve such a significant milestone.

Rather than focusing solely on his individual achievement, Son highlighted the importance of South Korea’s victory and clean sheet. He said finishing the international period with a win was particularly satisfying after a demanding run of matches.

The milestone adds another chapter to Son’s remarkable legacy. During his decade with Tottenham, he became one of the club’s greatest-ever players, scoring 173 goals in 454 appearances and captaining Spurs to the Europa League trophy in 2025.

Although Son has since moved to Los Angeles FC, his influence on South Korean football continues to grow. His latest record places him alone at the top of the country’s men’s scoring charts and further strengthens his status as one of the greatest footballers South Korea has produced.

For Tottenham supporters, the achievement is another reminder of the extraordinary player who spent ten memorable years in north London before beginning the next chapter of his career.
