Liverpool have been handed an injury concern ahead of their huge Premier League meeting with Manchester City after Alexander Isak was forced to withdraw from international duty with Sweden.
Isak picked up the problem during Sweden’s 2–1 victory over Romania. Although he completed the match and scored, the injury became more concerning in the following 24–48 hours.
Liverpool subsequently confirmed that the striker would return to the club from international duty because of a minor injury. He will now be assessed by Liverpool’s medical staff at the AXA Training Centre. (Svenska Fotbollsförbundet)
Sweden manager Graham Potter explained that Isak has a small thigh problem. Potter stressed that it is not considered a major injury, but the tight schedule meant the Liverpool forward would not be able to participate in Sweden’s remaining fixtures.
The Swedish Football Association also confirmed that Isak would leave the squad and continue his rehabilitation in consultation with Liverpool. (Svenska Fotbollsförbundet)
The timing is particularly frustrating for Liverpool because Isak has made an impressive start to the 2026/27 campaign. The 27-year-old has scored four goals in his first five Premier League appearances, establishing himself as a key part of Andoni Iraola’s attack. (Reuters)
Liverpool’s next Premier League fixture is a massive clash against Manchester City at Anfield on October 11. That means the Reds now have to wait for further medical assessments before knowing whether Isak will be available.
At this stage, there is no confirmation that Isak will miss the Manchester City game. The injury has been described as minor, and Liverpool’s medical team will monitor his recovery before making a decision on his availability.
For Liverpool supporters, the biggest positive is that Isak was withdrawn from international duty early rather than being risked in further matches. The club will hope the decision allows him enough time to recover and return to training before the City showdown. (Liverpool)
With Isak in strong goalscoring form, his availability could be crucial when Liverpool return to Premier League action.
Liverpool fans will now be waiting for the next medical update on Isak.
