Tottenham supporters have been given a strong indication of where things stand regarding a possible return to north London for former academy striker Troy Parrott.
The Republic of Ireland international has continued to develop impressively since permanently leaving Spurs in 2024, establishing himself as a prolific goalscorer during his spell with AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands. His performances eventually earned him a move to Spain, with Real Betis paying around £17.1million to secure his services during the summer.
Parrott has wasted little time making an impact at his new club. The 24-year-old has already scored important goals for Betis, finding the net against Real Madrid in LaLiga before following that up with another goal on his Champions League debut against Lille.
His impressive form has also continued at international level. Parrott has become an increasingly important figure for the Republic of Ireland and played a starring role in their push towards the World Cup play-offs last year. He famously scored twice against Portugal before producing a stunning hat-trick against Hungary to help Ireland secure a dramatic victory.
The striker added another memorable performance to his growing collection on Thursday night, scoring both of Ireland’s goals in their thrilling 2-2 Nations League draw with Austria in Dublin.
One of his goals was particularly spectacular, with Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson describing the individual effort as “magical” and admitting he wanted to watch it again.
“I haven’t seen my team score a goal like this. It was absolutely brilliant, individual brilliance, and I want to see it again,” Hallgrimsson said after the game.
The Ireland boss was also full of praise for Parrott’s development and current form, insisting the forward has been outstanding for his country over the past couple of years.
“He has been absolutely fantastic for us the last one or two years. He is flying at the moment,” Hallgrimsson added.
He later highlighted just how rare Parrott’s individual quality is, saying: “There are not many players who can do what he did. You will probably look at this goal again and again.”
Parrott’s latest brace means he has now scored six goals in his last six competitive appearances for Ireland, taking his overall international tally to 14 goals in 40 senior caps.
His remarkable scoring form has naturally prompted questions among some Tottenham supporters about whether the club made the wrong decision by allowing him to leave for just £6.7million in 2024.
Those questions have become even louder given Spurs’ struggles in front of goal under Roberto De Zerbi this season. Despite spending more than £300million during the summer transfer window, Tottenham failed to bring in a recognised out-and-out striker, leaving some supporters wondering whether Parrott could have provided the solution.
Parrott originally joined Tottenham from Irish side Belvedere as a teenager in 2017 and was viewed as one of the club’s promising young forwards. However, opportunities at senior level were limited, with the striker making only four appearances for Spurs before embarking on a series of loan spells.
He spent time with Millwall, Ipswich Town, MK Dons and Preston North End in the EFL before moving to the Netherlands, where his performances for Excelsior helped attract the attention of AZ Alkmaar.
His development continued rapidly after leaving Tottenham permanently, eventually earning him the move to Real Betis.
However, with Parrott now thriving in Spain and continuing to produce eye-catching performances for Ireland, Tottenham fans hoping for a possible reunion have seemingly been given a clear message.
Betis have no immediate intention of letting their new striker leave, meaning Spurs would likely face a significant challenge if they ever decide they want to bring their former academy graduate back to the club.
