Hungary right-back Bendegúz Bolla suffered a worrying ankle injury during Hungary’s Nations League match against Northern Ireland.
Bolla, 26, was starting his second consecutive game for Hungary when the incident happened in the 31st minute. Northern Ireland midfielder Isaac Price slid into a challenge while Bolla was clearing the ball and caught the defender’s ankle. The challenge was described by reports as clumsy rather than deliberate.
Bolla received lengthy treatment on the pitch and initially tried to continue, but he was clearly struggling. He was eventually replaced by Attila Osváth in the 34th minute. Bolla could not leave the area normally and was later taken away on a stretcher. One report also said he required oxygen while being taken from the field.
The injury could be significant, with Hungarian outlet M4 Sport describing it as a potentially serious ankle injury, although no confirmed diagnosis or recovery timeline had been announced in the reports available.
Bolla had played the full match against Ukraine in Hungary’s opening Nations League fixture, a 1–0 defeat, before this latest injury. He has 38 appearances and two assists for Hungary.
The match against Northern Ireland eventually finished 0–0, with Hungary earning a point despite losing Bolla to injury.
