Fabrizio Romano has sparked fresh speculation over Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola after posting a cryptic update on X, referencing an earlier report about the Reds’ strong interest in the Paris Saint-Germain winger.
While no deal has been confirmed, the post has fueled optimism that progress may be underway. Any major developments, however, are expected to wait until France complete their World Cup campaign.
Liverpool’s interest in Barcola remains genuine, but there are growing questions over whether the club should continue waiting for the 23-year-old or turn their attention to other attacking targets. With Andoni Iraola preparing for a demanding season that could exceed 50 matches, strengthening the squad in several key areas is becoming increasingly urgent.
The Reds struggled for pace out wide last season, an issue that frequently limited their attacking threat and left them more vulnerable defensively. Those shortcomings were widely viewed as a major factor behind the team’s disappointing 2025/26 campaign, making it easy to understand why Liverpool are keen on a player of Barcola’s quality.
However, delaying other transfer business while chasing the PSG star carries its own risks. Liverpool are still believed to be targeting reinforcements at defensive midfield, right-back, centre-back and on the right wing, with former Reds defender Stephen Warnock also highlighting those positions as priorities.
Cost is another major concern. Reports from respected journalist David Ornstein suggest Barcola could command a fee even higher than the £116 million Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson. If that proves to be the case, Liverpool must carefully consider whether committing such a huge portion of their budget to one player could limit their ability to strengthen the rest of the squad.
With so many areas still needing improvement, this transfer window may be one where Liverpool cannot afford to gamble.
