Ray Parlour backs Max Dowman to bounce back after Arsenal red card as he recalls his own costly Liverpool mistake

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour has backed teenage star Max Dowman to recover from his first senior red card, insisting that the setback should become an important learning experience rather than something that damages his confidence.
The 16-year-old Arsenal youngster was sent off during Tuesday night’s shocking Carabao Cup defeat against Fleetwood Town. Dowman reacted after receiving a heavy challenge from Fleetwood midfielder Harrison Neal, kicking out at his opponent and receiving a straight red card in the 85th minute.
Arsenal eventually suffered elimination after losing the match on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
The Gunners subsequently appealed against the dismissal, hoping to overturn the decision. However, their appeal was rejected by an independent commission on Thursday, meaning Dowman will serve a three-match domestic suspension.
Parlour recalls his difficult introduction to senior football
Parlour believes Dowman should not allow the incident to overshadow his promising development. He used his own experience as a teenager to explain why young footballers must learn how to handle difficult moments.
The former Arsenal midfielder recalled making an expensive mistake during his senior debut against Liverpool in January 1992, when he was just 18 years old.
Playing alongside David Rocastle in central midfield, Parlour gave away a penalty after fouling Liverpool forward Ronnie Rosenthal shortly before half-time.
He initially feared manager George Graham would be furious with him, but the Arsenal boss instead encouraged him to keep going.
Parlour eventually returned to Anfield the following season and delivered an excellent performance, helping Arsenal secure victory and earning the man-of-the-match award.
He believes that experience demonstrates how quickly a young player’s fortunes can change.
He believes Dowman must learn from the experience
Speaking about Dowman’s situation, Parlour explained that the teenager had experienced two completely different emotions within a few days.
He had enjoyed an impressive performance against Everton before suffering the disappointment of being dismissed against Fleetwood.
Parlour stressed that football is full of highs and lows, and the most important thing is how a player responds when things go wrong.
He also admitted that he felt Dowman was somewhat unfortunate to receive a red card, although he accepted that the referee had made his decision and the youngster must learn from it.
Parlour warns opponents will target the Arsenal youngster
The Arsenal legend also highlighted the physical attention talented young footballers often receive from opponents.
He referenced Lionel Messi, explaining that top players frequently have to deal with multiple opponents trying to stop them from influencing games.
According to Parlour, Dowman must learn to remain calm, avoid unnecessary reactions and concentrate on helping his team whenever opponents attempt to frustrate him.
Arsenal dressing room support will help Dowman
Parlour is confident that Dowman has the right people around him to guide him through this difficult period.
He specifically mentioned Mikel Arteta, the teenager’s family and experienced Arsenal players such as Declan Rice as important sources of support.
He believes their guidance will help Dowman understand what went wrong and return with a better attitude.
Despite the suspension, Parlour remains confident that the 16-year-old has a bright future and should not allow one mistake to define his career.
The main message from Parlour is that Dowman must learn from the setback, remain mentally strong and show his character when he gets another opportunity.
