Middlesbrough are demanding £20 million for sought-after midfielder Hayden Hackney, with Tottenham Hotspur among the clubs interested in bringing the Championship star to the Premier League this summer.
Spurs are exploring midfield reinforcements after deciding not to trigger the £26 million option to sign João Palhinha permanently following his loan spell. While the North London club could still return with a lower offer for the Bayern Munich midfielder, Hackney has emerged as a strong alternative.
The 23-year-old enjoyed a standout campaign, earning the Championship Player of the Season award after contributing five goals and eight assists in 38 league appearances. His performances have attracted widespread attention, with Everton, Brighton, and Crystal Palace also monitoring his situation. Sunderland and Nottingham Forest previously saw approaches rejected during the January transfer window.
With just one year remaining on his contract, some clubs may choose to wait until next summer when Hackney could become available on a free transfer. However, Middlesbrough face the risk of losing one of their prized assets for nothing if they fail to secure promotion again and are therefore keen to cash in now.
Tottenham are expected to strengthen significantly after narrowly avoiding relegation last season, and manager Roberto De Zerbi is targeting players capable of helping the club push for European qualification. Hackney’s energy, creativity, and all-round midfield qualities make him an attractive option as Spurs reshape their squad ahead of the new campaign.
