Alisson Had Already Chosen His Juventus Shirt Number Before Liverpool Blocked Transfer

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker reportedly came extremely close to leaving Anfield this summer, with the Brazilian even selecting a shirt number at Juventus before the move was ultimately blocked.

The 33-year-old had been strongly linked with a switch to Turin earlier in the summer and was reportedly very interested in the possibility of joining the Italian giants.

Fortunately for Liverpool, the transfer failed to materialise. However, Juventus could reportedly revive their interest in 2027, when Alisson’s contract expires and he could leave as a free agent.

Juve eventually turned their attention towards Emiliano Martinez, but that pursuit also fell through. They subsequently reached an agreement with Tottenham for Guglielmo Vicario, according to The Athletic.

Alisson had reportedly agreed personal terms with Juventus

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has shed more light on just how close Alisson was to leaving Liverpool.

Speaking on the Caffè Di Marzio podcast, via DAVEOCKOP, he claimed Juventus had already reached an agreement with the goalkeeper, who had even picked his preferred shirt number.

According to Di Marzio, Alisson was Juventus’ first-choice target and had already agreed personal terms before Liverpool made the decision to keep their No.1. Despite Juventus continuing to push, the Reds refused to sanction his departure, forcing the Serie A club to move on to Martinez.

Liverpool may eventually face an Alisson decision

Earlier in the summer, Liverpool supporters feared that Alisson could become another major figure from the Klopp era to leave Anfield, following the exits of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.

Liverpool ultimately prevented the Brazilian from joining Juventus, but his future could become a talking point again with his current contract running until June 2027.

Alisson remains one of the most important players left from Liverpool’s successful Klopp era and continues to provide enormous value between the posts.

While Andoni Iraola has alternative goalkeeping options, none currently offer the same level of experience, command, composure and leadership as the Brazilian.

Liverpool will eventually have to prepare for life without their long-serving goalkeeper, and that moment could arrive sooner than expected.

For now, though, Reds supporters can be grateful that Juventus’ attempt to sign Alisson fell through this summer.
