Tottenham Hotspur have effectively made their stance clear over their first-choice left-back ahead of the new season, with the club showing no intention of letting him leave this summer.
Despite Spurs’ struggles last term, the Italian defender consistently proved his importance whenever he featured. His composure in possession, ability to drive the team forward, and overall technical quality set him apart from the club’s other options on the left side of defence.
Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds Djed Spence’s future. The versatile full-back has attracted interest from several clubs, including Serie A champions Inter Milan, following his impressive performances for England at the World Cup. Tottenham are believed to be open to a sale if the right offer arrives, as Pedro Porro remains the undisputed first-choice right-back, while the Italian international continues to lead the pecking order on the left.
Although injury problems limited his impact during the 2025/26 campaign and briefly sparked speculation about his future, Spurs have never seriously considered cashing in. Interest from Italy has also remained limited.
New head coach Roberto De Zerbi reportedly views the left-back, alongside Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro, as central figures in his long-term plans. While he missed the chance to impress on the World Cup stage after Italy failed to qualify, his standing within the club has not diminished.
Tottenham are also exploring a loan move for Souza, and with Spence edging closer to a move to Inter, the squad would be left with Andy Robertson as the primary backup on the left. That further underlines the club’s confidence in their first-choice full-back, with De Zerbi determined to build his defence around him and hoping he can enjoy a healthier campaign.
