Tottenham’s reported interest in Cody Gakpo may not be as straightforward as it seems, with suggestions the links could be part of a wider strategy to strengthen their position in talks for Manchester City winger Savinho.
Reports from the Netherlands claimed Spurs are monitoring the Liverpool forward, who has scored 50 goals and provided 23 assists in 180 appearances since joining from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023. Despite those respectable numbers, some have questioned the credibility of the rumours.
Speaking to Tottenham News, John Wenham suggested the speculation could be a tactical move designed to put pressure on Manchester City during negotiations for Savinho. Spurs have already secured Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi this summer and remain keen on the Brazilian winger after missing out on him last year.
Interest in Savinho appeared to cool after reports of a potential £60 million deal surfaced earlier this month, but Wenham believes the Gakpo links may be intended to show City that Tottenham have alternative options. Such a move could encourage the Premier League champions to accelerate discussions.
While Savinho remains Spurs’ preferred target, Gakpo would still represent a strong alternative. The Dutch international endured a difficult season along with Liverpool, but his Premier League experience and proven quality could make him an attractive backup option should a deal for Savinho fail to materialise.
