Liverpool close in on new Szoboszlai deal after agreeing terms
Liverpool are on the verge of completing one of their most significant pieces of business this summer, with Dominik Szoboszlai expected to sign a new long-term contract following months of negotiations.
Speaking on the latest Anfield Index podcast, Bence Bocsak of Anfield Watch shared an update on the midfielder’s future, revealing that discussions have reached an advanced stage.
Bocsak explained that reports of the agreement first surfaced in Hungary before Anfield Watch became the first English-language outlet to break the story.
According to him, there is now widespread confidence that the deal will be completed.
“I think we can safely say it’s going to happen. Dominik Szoboszlai is set to sign a new contract with Liverpool,” Bocsak said.
Although the paperwork has yet to be finalised, he confirmed that both parties have already agreed on the terms after around eight months of negotiations. He also expects the contract to be signed shortly after the player’s representatives arrive on Merseyside.
A key reason behind Liverpool’s determination to extend Szoboszlai’s stay is his leadership qualities. Having closely followed his rise with Hungary, Bocsak praised the midfielder’s ability to deliver in crucial moments.
“He is a leader. He’s someone who thrives under pressure,” he said, recalling Szoboszlai’s decisive goal that helped Hungary qualify for the European Championship after a lengthy absence.
Bocsak believes those same traits have been evident at Liverpool, highlighting the midfielder’s consistency even when others struggled.
“When others weren’t performing at their usual level, he was. That says a lot about his mentality and character.”
He also suggested Szoboszlai could eventually take on an even greater leadership role at Anfield.
“I see him as a strong contender for the vice-captaincy, and when Virgil van Dijk eventually moves on, he’ll be among the leading candidates to become Liverpool captain.”
Podcast host Gags Tandon echoed those sentiments, praising Szoboszlai’s commitment and versatility.
“He never complained. Whether it was right-back, right wing, left wing, defensive midfield, central midfield or as a No. 10, he always stepped up for the team.”
Tandon urged supporters to fully appreciate the Hungary international’s dedication, even joking that Liverpool fans should finally create a chant in his honour.
If the agreement is completed as expected, Szoboszlai’s new contract is likely to keep him at Anfield until at least 2030, providing Liverpool with long-term stability as they begin a new chapter under Andoni Iraola.
With terms reportedly agreed and optimism growing from both Hungarian and Liverpool-based sources, official confirmation now appears to be only a matter of time.
