Tottenham Hotspur could be facing a major setback this summer, with reports suggesting central defender Cristian Romero is keen to leave despite manager Roberto De Zerbi wanting to keep him at the club.
Romero, regarded as one of the Premier League’s top defenders, remains under contract until 2029 after signing a new deal last year. Even so, speculation over his future has refused to fade, with clubs across Europe continuing to monitor his situation.
Journalist Gianluigi Longari reports that the Argentine international is pushing for an exit. According to Longari, De Zerbi rates Romero highly and is eager to retain him, but the defender is attracting strong interest from FC Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, and Inter Milan. While Italian clubs admire the 28-year-old, financial constraints could make a deal difficult.
Romero has enjoyed a successful spell at Tottenham, helping the club lift the Europa League in the 2024/25 season. On the international stage, he has also played a key role in Argentina’s triumphs at the 2022 World Cup and the 2021 and 2024 Copa América tournaments.
Meanwhile, Tottenham have already approved the sale of promising defender Luka Vušković. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. have agreed a deal worth an initial £46 million, with add-ons and a sell-on clause potentially taking the package beyond £50 million. Vušković is expected to sign a contract until 2031 after completing his medical in the United States.
