Liverpool delay decision on Ronald Araújo’s future
Liverpool are reportedly not yet ready to make Ronald Araújo’s move permanent, despite the defender making an encouraging start to life at Anfield.
Araújo joined Liverpool from Barcelona on loan during the summer and has already impressed under manager Andoni Iraola. The club reportedly have an option to sign the Uruguay international permanently for around £47 million, but they are prepared to wait until the end of the 2026/27 season before making a final decision.
The 27-year-old has already shown his quality in important matches. Against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League, he provided an assist for Dominik Szoboszlai and completed four passes into the final third. Against Ipswich, he reportedly made nine clearances, completed two dribbles and won nine of 10 duels.
Araújo also appears determined to settle in England. The report says he has hired an English tutor and accepted a pay cut to complete his move to Liverpool.
However, Liverpool are reportedly taking their time because of the defender’s previous fitness problems. The club want to see whether he can remain consistently available and perform at a high level throughout the season before committing around £47m.
His versatility could also be important for Liverpool. Araújo can operate at centre-back or right-back, giving Iraola another defensive option. Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk is now 35 and reportedly has an uncertain future beyond next summer, which could influence Liverpool’s eventual decision on Araújo.
In short: Liverpool are impressed with Araújo’s early performances, but no permanent transfer decision has been made yet. The club reportedly wants to assess him over the full season before deciding whether to pay the approximately £47m option.
