Kylian Mbappé has revealed that he came very close to joining Liverpool in 2017, when he was still a teenage sensation at Monaco. Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp personally tried to convince him and his family to choose Anfield.
Klopp went to extraordinary lengths during the pursuit. He travelled from Blackpool to Nice, where Mbappé and his family boarded a private jet. The plane reportedly flew around while Klopp held talks with the family, with Liverpool trying to keep the negotiations away from public attention.
Mbappé’s mother, Fayza Lamari, was reportedly particularly interested in the Liverpool option. However, the young forward ultimately decided against moving to England. He chose to remain closer to home and eventually joined Paris Saint-Germain, initially on loan before making the move permanent for €180 million in 2018.
Mbappé later spent seven years at PSG before joining Real Madrid in 2024. The latest comments have once again revived discussion among Liverpool supporters about what might have happened if the Reds had managed to complete the deal in 2017.
Important: this latest story is primarily about a past transfer that Liverpool attempted, rather than confirmation that Mbappé is currently joining Liverpool.
