Bad news for Liverpool as injury setback leaves new signing Víctor Muñoz without a return date
Liverpool’s newest signing, Víctor Muñoz, has suffered an untimely injury setback just after sealing his move to Anfield, with Spain confirming there is currently no timetable for his return.
The Spanish winger was close to joining Newcastle United before Liverpool stepped in at the last moment to complete a €40 million deal. The Reds moved swiftly to finalize the transfer and even carried out his medical while he was away on international duty with Spain at the FIFA World Cup.
Although Muñoz signed a long-term contract with Liverpool, his celebrations were quickly overshadowed by fresh fitness concerns.
The 22-year-old had only recently recovered from a previous injury and returned to full training before Spain’s 0-0 draw with Cape Verde. However, during his individualized recovery programme, he suffered another muscle injury.
In an official statement, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed: “During the planned and individualized recovery process, an additional muscle injury has occurred, which will delay his return to competition. His availability for the upcoming matches will depend on the evolution of his symptoms.”
Spain have not disclosed the exact nature of the injury or provided any indication of when Muñoz could return to action.
According to Cadena SER, the setback is expected to rule him out for the remainder of the World Cup group stage, although he could return for the knockout rounds if Spain progress.
The report adds that the injury has come at the worst possible time, interrupting Muñoz’s momentum just as he was beginning to compete regularly with his teammates and forcing Spain to rethink their plans ahead of the clash with Saudi Arabia.
Liverpool will now closely monitor the winger’s condition while maintaining regular contact with Spain’s medical staff. The youngster has experienced an emotional whirlwind over the past 24 hours—completing a dream move to Anfield before being sidelined by another injury.
The Reds reportedly paid €40 million to secure his signature, with 50 percent of the transfer fee going to Real Madrid. Reports also suggest Los Blancos hold a buyback clause that becomes active next summer.
For now, however, Liverpool can only wait, as there remains no clear timeline for when Muñoz will be fit enough to make his competitive debut.
