Andy Robertson Moves Within One Game Of 100 Scotland Caps
Tottenham defender Andy Robertson has reached another major milestone with Scotland, earning his 99th senior international appearance during Tuesday night’s 3–0 Nations League defeat to Switzerland at Hampden Park.
The Scotland captain is now just one appearance away from becoming a centurion and only three matches short of equalling Kenny Dalglish’s long-standing national record of 102 caps.
Robertson started the match at left-back and remained on the pitch for 74 minutes before being replaced by Josh Doig. Scotland faced a difficult evening after Jack Hendry was sent off early, leaving the hosts with 10 men for much of the game.
Switzerland took advantage of the numerical advantage, with Ricardo Rodriguez putting the visitors ahead from a free-kick. Nico Elvedi and Zeki Amdouni then added further goals in the second half to complete a 3–0 victory.
The result leaves Scotland with just one point from their opening two Group B1 matches under new manager Sebastien Pocognoli.
Robertson now has the opportunity to make his 100th appearance for Scotland when they face North Macedonia on Saturday, October 3, with kick-off scheduled for 7:45pm UK time. Scotland will then take on Slovenia three days later, giving the defender another opportunity to close the gap on Dalglish’s record.
The Tottenham full-back made his Scotland debut on March 5, 2014, coming off the bench during a 1–0 friendly win against Poland in Warsaw while he was still playing for Dundee United.
His route to the top was far from straightforward. After being released by Celtic as a youngster, Robertson rebuilt his career at Queen’s Park before earning moves to Dundee United and Hull City. His performances eventually earned him a move to Liverpool, where he established himself as one of Europe’s leading full-backs.
During his nine years at Anfield, Robertson collected major honours, including the Champions League and two Premier League titles. His influence for Scotland also continued to grow alongside his success at club level.
In September 2018, Alex McLeish handed Robertson the Scotland captaincy. Since then, he has set the country’s record for appearances as captain and played in every group match at both Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.
Across his 99 international appearances, Robertson has contributed four goals and 11 assists for Scotland.
Reaching 100 caps would represent another significant achievement, while equalling Dalglish’s 102 appearances would put him on the verge of becoming Scotland’s most-capped player.
Robertson’s next two international fixtures could therefore prove particularly important as he continues his pursuit of the national record.
The defender will also be looking ahead to Tottenham’s return to Premier League action on October 10, when Spurs are scheduled to travel to Manchester to face Michael Carrick’s United.
Robertson joined Tottenham on July 1, 2026, after his Liverpool contract expired. The Scotland captain ended a nine-year spell at Anfield and arrived in north London with considerable experience and leadership. Tottenham had announced his signing on June 5, with Robertson subsequently taking the club’s vacant No. 3 shirt.
