What Happened to Gareth Bale’s Tottenham Doppelgänger Who Also Played for Spurs?
Kenny McEvoy has once again attracted huge attention online because of his remarkable resemblance to former Tottenham and Real Madrid star Gareth Bale.
More than 2.6 million people reportedly viewed posts about McEvoy within 24 hours after his old Tottenham photos resurfaced on social media. One post joked that it was hard to believe McEvoy was not actually Bale, sharing several images from his time at Spurs.
Despite spending five years with Tottenham, McEvoy never made a senior appearance for the club. His closest opportunity came during the 2013/14 Europa League campaign, when he was named on the substitutes’ bench twice.
After leaving Tottenham, McEvoy continued his career with several clubs, including York City, Waterford and South Normanton Athletic. However, comparisons with Bale have followed him years after his departure from North London.
McEvoy’s Tottenham Exit
In January 2016, McEvoy publicly expressed his relief after Tottenham finally agreed to release him.
At the time, he was playing for York City during his fourth loan spell in two years. He had previously spent time on loan with Peterborough United, Colchester United and Stevenage.
McEvoy explained that he had decided months earlier that he needed to leave Tottenham in order to pursue regular first-team football, believing that his chances of breaking into the Spurs senior side were becoming increasingly unlikely.
He thanked Tottenham supporters who had backed him and said he was looking forward to starting the next chapter of his career.
McEvoy subsequently joined York City permanently but left the club at the end of the 2015/16 season. He then moved to South Normanton Athletic, where he enjoyed a productive spell.
In January 2017, several clubs showed interest in him, including Sligo Rovers and Waterford. McEvoy eventually chose to join Waterford.
Why McEvoy Left Professional Football
McEvoy spent only six months at Waterford before leaving the club by mutual agreement.
Reports at the time stated that he accepted a full-time job in England so he could provide greater stability for his young family.
He explained that the opportunity was one he could not turn down because it would allow his family to settle after several years of moving around.
According to his LinkedIn profile, McEvoy is now working as a managing consultant for Ford & Stanley, a UK-based specialist recruitment and talent services company.
Although his professional football career ended relatively early, his striking resemblance to Gareth Bale continues to bring him attention whenever his old Tottenham photos resurface online.
