Liverpool Prepare for Possible January Offers for Florian Wirtz
Liverpool are reportedly expecting renewed interest in Florian Wirtz when the January transfer window opens, with Bayern Munich among the clubs keeping an eye on the German midfielder.
Despite the growing speculation, Liverpool are understood to have no current intention of allowing the 23-year-old to leave Anfield. Wirtz joined the Reds from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025 for an initial fee of around £100 million, with the deal potentially reaching £116 million.
However, his performances since arriving in England have not consistently matched the expectations that came with such a major transfer.
During his first season at Liverpool, Wirtz recorded 15 goal contributions in 49 appearances. His start to the current campaign has been more difficult, with the midfielder managing just one assist in his first five competitive appearances. He has also gone 12 competitive matches for club and country without scoring.
Bayern Munich Continue to Monitor Wirtz
Bayern Munich’s interest in Wirtz is not new. The German giants were previously among the clubs interested in signing him before Liverpool completed his transfer from Leverkusen.
Reports suggest Bayern could consider making an approach if Liverpool ever become willing to listen to offers. However, admiration for the player does not necessarily mean the club is currently preparing an official bid.
Wirtz’s struggles in the Premier League have nevertheless increased speculation about his future. His familiarity with German football and Bayern’s previous interest make the possibility of a return to the Bundesliga something that could continue to attract attention.
Liverpool Still Want Wirtz to Succeed
Liverpool’s current position is that Wirtz should be given more time to adapt rather than being sold after a relatively short period at the club.
The midfielder was particularly effective in Germany when operating between the lines, combining with teammates around the penalty area and moving freely into central attacking positions. Liverpool are still working to find the tactical setup that allows him to reproduce those qualities consistently.
Manager Andoni Iraola is reportedly continuing to experiment with Wirtz’s role, suggesting that the club remains focused on helping him find his best position rather than preparing for an immediate departure.
Selling him now could also be financially difficult because Liverpool invested as much as £116 million in the player only a year ago. His current market value may not reflect that investment while his form is under scrutiny.
Former Liverpool midfielder Vladimir Smicer has also reportedly encouraged the club to resist any potential move from Bayern Munich, believing Wirtz still possesses the ability to become an important player for the Reds.
For now, Liverpool appear determined to keep the German international, but the midfielder’s performances over the coming months could play a major role in determining how much transfer speculation surrounds him when January arrives.
