Roberto De Zerbi hinted last week that Tottenham’s transfer business isn’t over yet, telling fans another “bomba” signing is still expected before the window shuts. Although he later played down the excitement, the Spurs boss confirmed the club are still targeting two or three more arrivals before the September 1 deadline.
One player back on Tottenham’s radar is Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo. Spurs insider Paul O’Keefe recently claimed the Dutch international has become the club’s leading attacking target.
Earlier this summer, Fabrizio Romano reported that Liverpool were not looking to sell Gakpo, while the player has shown no desire to leave despite uncertainty over his role under new manager Andoni Iraola.
However, Romano and Ben Jacobs have both suggested Tottenham would be the frontrunners if Liverpool decided to cash in.
According to Anfield Watch, Liverpool have now placed a £72 million (€85m) valuation on Gakpo. Having signed him for around £35m-£45m in 2022 and tied him down until 2030, the Reds are under no pressure to lower their asking price.
Liverpool reportedly based that valuation on Anthony Gordon’s €80m (£69.3m) transfer to Barcelona, believing Gakpo deserves an even higher fee due to his greater experience and proven quality.
With Iraola now in charge following Arne Slot’s exit, Liverpool’s attacking plans have shifted toward quicker, more direct wide players. After Mohamed Salah’s departure, the Reds have been linked with several replacements, including Yan Diomande and PSG star Bradley Barcola.
Barcola remains Liverpool’s dream target, but reports suggest the club will not overspend. As things stand, Gakpo is expected to stay at Anfield unless a club, potentially Tottenham, is willing to match Liverpool’s £72m valuation.
