Tottenham supporters have been left surprised by the club’s reported valuation of captain Cristian Romero, with the Argentine defender expected to leave after the World Cup.
Spurs prepared for Romero’s departure early in the transfer window by signing Dutch centre-back Jan Paul van de Ven, who is expected to form a partnership with Micky van de Ven next season.
Romero’s future has been uncertain for months following a difficult campaign plagued by injuries and suspensions. A knee injury suffered during Roberto De Zerbi’s first match in charge forced Kevin Danso to play a key role during the closing stages of the season. Despite his struggles, Romero remains one of the club’s top defenders and was instrumental in Tottenham’s Europa League triumph.
According to Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari, via Daily Hotspur, Tottenham have set an asking price of around €50 million (£42.6m) for the 28-year-old—roughly the same fee they paid to sign him five years ago. The reported valuation has surprised many supporters, especially given Romero’s proven quality and strong performances for Argentina at the World Cup.
Reports also suggest there is a gentleman’s agreement allowing Romero to leave, limiting Spurs’ negotiating position despite the defender still having two years remaining on his contract.
Barcelona have reportedly revived their long-standing interest in Romero, with the Spanish giants yet to sign a centre-back this summer. Meanwhile, Inter Milan have also made enquiries about the Argentine as they continue discussions over a possible move for Djed Spence. However, Inter may need to structure any deal as an initial loan with an obligation to buy due to financial constraints.
A return to Serie A could suit Romero, who excelled during his time at Atalanta before moving to North London. Inter’s three-man defence would provide a familiar tactical setup that could help him rediscover his best form.
